Champagne Agrapart |
Located in the Grand Cru village of Avize in the Côte des Blancs, this is Chardonnay country and the brothers, Pascal and Fabrice, are at the helm of their family’s 9.5ha domaine continuing the legacy of producing and estate-bottling their Champagnes since the inception of the domaine in 1894. Their vineyards are composed primarily of the famous chalky soils of Champagne with varying amounts of clay and have always been farmed organically. The Agrapart family put in a large amount of resources in order to craft their own Champagnes because it was paramount to be able to express the singularity of their vineyards and keep the quality at the highest level. They make 7 different cuvées showcasing these different terroirs. Our favorite one is the vintage-dated, Vénus, named for the original horse that plowed the La Fosse vineyard, the source of this wine, that was planted in 1959 and is aged sur latte for 5 years before being disgorged and released. All of their champagnes are incredibly special and the truest expressions of a Blanc des Blancs. |

Mayacamas |
There are only a handful of wineries in Napa Valley that can boast the storied history of Mayacamas beginning with being one of six wineries established in the 1880s in a very remote location on Mount Veeder--an AVA on the western side of Napa along the Mayacamas mountains that separates Napa from Sonoma Valley. Because of its proximity to San Pablo Bay, it is Napa’s coolest mountain AVA, yielding smaller berries of concentrated complexity that result in wines high in tannin and acidity that have great aging potential. Even though it is one of Napa’s largest AVAs, it is the least planted due to the ruggedness of the terrain so the few spots that are conducive to vineyards are small attracting only the most passionate and artisanal winemakers. The original owner sold his wine by the barrel sending horse-drawn carriages down the treacherous mountain trails and then ferrying them by barge to San Francisco. In 1941, the Taylors purchased the property, re-christened the estate Mayacamas vineyards, created the label still in use today, planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on the property, and invested heavily in the famous large oak casks and winemaking infrastructure still in use today. Bob Travers and his wife purchased the property in 1968 after his apprentice with Heitz Cellars and he crafted the legendary 1971 vintage that was included in the Judgement of Paris tasting in 1976 putting Mayacamas on the international map and solidifying the signature traditional winemaking style of Mayacamas for six decades. In 2013, the Schottenstein family acquired the property committed to continuing the legacy of Mayacamas, but also with the resources to invest in some needed areas. We are incredibly fortunate to feature these wines on our list showcasing the most beautiful expressions of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. |

Paolo Scavino |
Boasting a 120yr old track record, Enrico Scavino with his daughters, Enrica and Elisa, are crafting some of the most stunning expressions of Nebbiolo in the storied village of Castiglione Falletto. The stats are impressive: they own and farm 23ha of vineyards separated into 20 different crus in 6 of the 11 Barolo villages producing over 15 individual wines. Their biggest impact on Barolo is that they were one of the first estates to produce a single-vineyard from their Bric dël Fiasc cru in 1978 which ushered in a whole new era of single-vineyard bottlings from Barolo and Barbaresco. Previously, producers in this region created a house style by blending Nebbiolo from all their different vineyard holdings throughout the eleven villages, similar to Champagne. This immediately elevated the region’s reputation because now the terroir of each vineyard could be appreciated which is always a plus for a wine connoisseur. Stylistically, the wines tend to showcase the fruit of Nebbiolo a little more front and center and are aged in new French oak barrique giving aromas of vanilla and allspice on the nose and palate. Due to these characteristics, these wines are a personal favorite of the wine team which is why we have amassed a large representation of the Scavino wines in breadth and depth allowing you to also immerse yourself in these one-of-a-kind gems. |

Guillaume d'Angerville |
The D’Angerville origin story is one that we can get behind. The estate goes back a mere 130+ years; but in the 1920s, Jacques D’Angerville blew the whistle on the widespread fraudulent practice of blending Burgundy wine with wine from outside regions by the négociants in Burgundy. At the time, like Champagne, the vignerons or farmers, did not estate-bottle due to the high costs of doing so, instead selling their bulk juice to the négociants who would then bottle and market the wines. Jacques took a very risky stance and threatened a lawsuit against these négociants that left him without clients for his wine, forcing him to do everything himself. This forever changed the landscape of Burgundy because once he was successful, other producers followed suit creating a power shift to the farmers or Domaines; but more importantly, establishing credibility to Burgundian wines in the world. Today, the estate is run by the current Marquis, Guillaume d’Angerville, who has maintained the exemplary quality of the wines while taking on the herculean task of converting the 15 ha of vineyards that they own to biodynamic farming in 2009. The flagship of the estate remains the monopole (solely-owned), Clos des Ducs, which lies just north of the family’s manor house in Volnay. Other top premier crus are Fremiets, Champans, Caillerets and Taillepieds-all are the essence of Volnay. It's impossible not to fall in love with these wines because they personify classic, old-school Burgundy. The Pinot Noir grapes are de-stemmed, only indigenous yeasts are used, the wines are aged for 15-18 months in mostly used French barriques and the wines are rarely fined or filtered. All these vinification choices (aka non-interventionist winemaking) result in a very pure expression of the terroir of these exceptional vineyards while contributing to the magnificent age-ability of these extraordinary wines. Enjoy our selection of one of the greatest domaines in Burgundy! |
